Jesus Calms A Storm
Mark 4:35-41
And on that day, when the evening had come, he said to them, Let
us go over to the other side. And going away from the people, they took him
with them, as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him. And a great
storm of wind came up, and the waves came into the boat, so that the boat was
now becoming full. And he himself was in the back of the boat, sleeping on the
cushion: and they, awaking him, said, Master, is it nothing to you that we are
in danger of destruction? And he came out of his sleep, and gave strong orders
to the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be at rest. And the wind went down,
and there was a great calm. And he said to them, Why are you full of fear? Have
you still no faith? And their fear was great, and they said one to another, who
then is this, that even the wind and the sea do his orders?
Jesus
calms the storms
Kids Church Talk:
1. Are things always peaceful around your home? (Discuss)
2. What sorts of things could be done to make the world a little more peaceful
and how hard would they be to actually achieve? (Discuss)
3. Being scared is something that we all experience. Even when we feel fairly
safe with our Mom or Dad or special friend, sometimes we still feel a little
scared.
* This is also what happened to Jesus' special friends one day on a boat when
the wind came up.
* Explain the erratic way the water blows up in that part of the country and
how high the waves were. Make a point to stress that this was a very dangerous storm
and the boat could easily have toppled and they could have drowned.
4. Even when Jesus was with the disciples, this storm still had them frightened.
They know Jesus could still the storm, but panicked when he did nothing.
* I guess if it can happen to people when Jesus is present, it is no wonder at
times we too can be scared.
* We too can call on Jesus when things are not going right, knowing he will
help to calm the storm (situation) for us.
* Having a friend like Jesus makes us very special people.
What you need to get ready:
Have the
children make a toy boat.
*
Supplies: Tooth picks, play dough or clay and cut out triangles
out
of construction paper for the sail, a tub of water. Tape the
middle
part of the toothpick to the sail and put a small piece
of
play dough at the bottom of the toothpick. Children can
put
there boats in the water and then pretend that a storm is
coming
up and make waves in the water. It would probably be
wise
to have to boats in the water one at a time, or it could
get very wet.
* Use a fan or hair dryer to rough up the water in a tub of water to give the
choppy water effect.
